Imagine the surprise on the Junior-K kids’ faces when the St. Louis Fire Department showed up at the front door of Fillmore House during their morning meeting. Turns out one of the Pre-K children pulled the fire alarm. We’re talking 3- and 4-year-olds, so these things happen.

No smoke, no fire, but the firefighters checked just to be sure. They were awesome. The kids were a little nervous at first, but an up close and personal opportunity like this doesn’t present itself often. The firefighters took photos with the kids, let the kids try on their coats and helmets, which smelled like smoke, and talked about their equipment. They stayed for photos and some high fives.

After the firefighters left, the Junior-Kers headed up to science class. That’s where the alarm went off for the scheduled tornado drill (a surprise to the kids). One of the Junior-K kids summed up their morning: “We had an accident fire drill and an on-purpose tornado drill.” Big day in Fillmore!

Thank you, St. Louis Fire Department, for that unexpected, firsthand lesson about firefighters. You made our day!
